Profiling Articles (Main Idea and Supporting Details)

This is the collection of articles I profiled. One of the best articles I have read that really caught my interest.

ARTICLE #1

Title: The Impact of the Internet on Society: A Global Perspective Author: Manuel Castells Publication: MIT Technology Review URL: https://www.technologyreview.com/s/530566/the-impact-of-the-internet-on-society-a-global-perspective/

Main Idea: The Internet and the Web constitute the technological infrastructure of the global network society, and the understanding of their logic is a key field of research.

Supporting Details:

  1. Available evidence shows that the Internet neither isolates people nor reduces their sociability; it actually increases sociability, civic engagement, and the intensity of family and friendship relationships, in all cultures.

  2. Globally, time spent on social networking sites surpassed time spent on e-mail in November 2007, and the number of social networking users surpassed the number of e-mail users in July 2009. Today, social networking sites are the preferred platforms for all kinds of activities, both business and personal, and sociability has dramatically increased — but it is a different kind of sociability.

  3. Because people are increasingly at ease in the Web’s multidimensionality, marketers, government, and civil society are migrating massively to the networks people construct by themselves and for themselves. At root, social-networking entrepreneurs are really selling spaces in which people can freely and autonomously construct their lives.

ARTICLE #2

Title: The Role Of Technology in the Education of the Future Author: Dennis Prezzo Publication: World Economic Forum URL: https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2017/05/science-of-learning/

Main Idea: As we embark on the Fourth Industrial Revolution, it's clear that technology will play a central role in nearly all aspects of our lives.

  2. By applying learning science insights to IT education, we can create a dynamic, digital, and hands-on learning experience that is tailored, flexible, and relevant, developing the talent needed to power the digital economy.

  3. Combining the learning sciences with digital innovation, we can leverage the best of what digitally enhanced and human-driven education have to offer.

ARTICLE #3

Title: Social Media’s Impact On Society Author: Ruth Anne Shellabarge Publication: Odyssey URL: https://www.theodysseyonline.com/social-medias-impact-society

Main Idea: Social media has revolutionized the way we view ourselves, the way we see others and the way we interact with the world around us.

Supporting Details:

  1. Social media has many positive implications, including promoting awareness of specific causes, advertising businesses and helping foster friendships between individuals who may have never met without social networking, the over-usage of social media networks can also lead to negative implications.

  2. From an advertising perspective, social media offers a great outlet for charities, businesses, and individuals to promote themselves. Social media can be used as an outlet for global organizations to bring awareness to the causes they support and spread positive news that traditional media often doesn't cover.

  3. Social media also allows for self-expression and can serve as a creative outlet for individuals to express themselves, share their artwork and share their voice on specific topics.

ARTICLE #4

Title: Digital Learning: How Technology is Reshaping Teaching? Author: Sophie Curtis Publication: The Telegraph URL: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/news/11051228/Digital-learning-how-technology-is-reshaping-teaching.html

Main Idea: It's not about just shifting traditional lessons onto screens - it's about allowing pupils to make use of their devices to truly enhance their learning while giving teachers better ways to track individual achievement and personalize lessons.

Supporting Details:

  1. Over four in 10 households now have a tablet, meaning that children are becoming computer-literate before they’ve even started primary school - and we’ve all heard about the techno-babies who can handle an iPad before they have learnt how to tie their own shoelaces.

  2. It is unsurprising, therefore, that technology is playing an increasingly central role in the classroom - not just in ICT lessons, where children will start learning to write code from the age of five this year, but in English, Math and Science lessons as well.

  3. Using technology in an educational environment not only better reflects children’s life outside the classroom, but also allows them to hone their digital skills in a way that will continue to be valuable throughout their adult life.

SYNTHESIS:

The evolution of technology has changed society in both positive and negative ways. The articles are also pointing out the effect of misusing technology and abuse in the result of negative effects of technology on human society. People all over the world use and benefit from modern technology. Technology has simplified the access to many tools people need in education, medicine, communication, transportation, etc. However, using it too often has its drawbacks as well. In most cases, the time of finishing projects is cut by more than half with the help of technology. Many people do not realize that technology has its negative affects society as well, and its rapid advances has changed life for worse in a number of different ways.
